First Blog Assignment!

Classmates,

Although I wish I could say I have had a vast audience of readers for my writing, my primary audience for any writing that I have done in the past typically consisted of my peers and classmates. I enjoyed writing in my short story class and sharing the stories with my class, as well as hearing others stories. It is interesting to see how other people come up with ideas and turn ideas into stories. I like creative writing, but I would rather do more a more factual style of writing, the writing involved in specific reports and research papers. Our main research paper in high school was very interesting to me, I chose to write about how a certain character in the book, One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest was a christ like firure. I found it easiest to do research online rather than in a library because there are so many more resources available online and my topic required many different sources of information in order to be a valid argument. Most of the other stories that I had written so far were very difficult to come up with, but the research paper came much easier to me. I would rather write about something of my own choosing or of a topic given to me rather than to come up with something creative on my own. I wish that creativity came more easily to me, it seems to be something that I have trouble with. Being secretary of my school's spanish club, I was the person responsible for writing the weekly newsletter that was distributed to all teachers, students, and familys of the students. These newsletters were usually informal and generally brief, however, they were something that I enjoyed writing because I knew that people would be reading something that I wrote and hopefully like what I had to say about the recent spanish club events and meetings. I liked having a large audience and having a specific topic to write about. Besides the above examples, I have not had much of a chance to share my writing with those around me. It would be interesting to see peoples responses to my writing and get more feedback than I've recieved before. I am not familiar with blogging or posting writing on the internet or a social networking site, but I still find the idea of having others read my writing very exciting. Hopefully, this blog will give us an oppertunity to expand our audiences. Thanks for reading!

  1. You had a short story class in high school? That seems really interesting! We had a creative writing class but it was an elective and I never got to take it... I'm jealous you got to explore your creative writing skills throughout high school. Once I finished freshman year it seemed like all we ever did was write factual papers. Also- Spanish Club sounds really official, it's nice that you got to perform a job you like doing writing-wise.

  2. My school made us write tons of poems and I always loved that. Not just writing the poems themselves; I just feel that writing poetry helped me get outside the box and opened me up to creativity in writing. I've always wanted to read that book also, it sounds pretty interesting.

  3. I too like to pick my own topic to write about. It gives me more creative license to make it my own.
P.S. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is one of my favorite books of all time!!

  4. Writing for a weekly newsletter although it sounds intimidating to me seems like it would be a great way to expand your writing experience and knowledge. Not only because of the sheer frequency of your newsletters but also the technique used rather than in an academic paper both probably played a role in enhancing your writing ability. Sounds like a great way to improve ones writing and add a new exciting dynamic to writing to a large crowd.

  5. As you said, I am also not very familiar with blogging or internet writing, but I think it is an awesome opportunity. It will definitely challenge me to expand my writing capabilities, and I'm excited to see how my work will develop over the course of this class.

  6. Really good post, Taylor. Your writing is very readable, and you've picked some really interesting things to share. In the future, you might consider breaking posts up into smaller paragraphs (it can make a long post look more inviting to a reader).

  7. That's really cool that you had your writing published regularly! I would be way to nervous to write for a big audience. I've never written a blog before either; I think we're all a little new to this. Your blog was good though!
